• The series opens with a two-parter written by John Mulaney called “Soldier of Illusion” which is inspired by Werner Herzog’s Burden of Dreams. The episode is set in the early 1980s and centers around a visionary director who tries to will his magnum opus into existence while working in the remote, punishing conditions of the Russian Ular mountains. This episode stars Alexander Skarsgård and Nicholas Braun.
• The second episode is called “Trouver Frisson” and it’s a homage to Agnès Varda’s The Gleaners and I. The episode chronicles celebrated French filmmaker Ida Leos (Liliane Rovère) and her search for why she no longer experiences “frisson” – the goosebumps that have always been her guide.
• The season also features three episodes written by Seth Meyers. The first “Two Hairdressers in Bagglyport” stars Cate Blanchett and Harriet Walter and mashed up 3 Salons at the Seaside and The September Issue.
• “How They Threw Rocks” sports an all-Welsh cast of Trystan Gravelle, Jonathan Pryce, John Rhys-Davies, and Tom Jones as they chronicle Welsh sport of Craig Maes.
• There’s also “My Monkey Grifter,” a take on My Octopus Teacher where a filmmaker forms a deep, emotional, and financially taxing relationship with a monkey who may have ulterior motives.
